Bike Camp

Bike camp continues to be one of our most successful outreach programs. Parents of children with Down syndrome, autism and other cognitive impairments increasingly see how learning to ride a bike furthers their child's independence and opportunities for schooling and jobs while at the same time promoting social interaction and a healthier, more enjoyable quality of life.

Cost: $125/participant

Requirements for Participation

To ensure the safety of our participants we have listed certain criteria that all participants must meet to be eligible to attend camp. These include:

  • Minimum age is 8 years old
  • Must have a disability; Down syndrome, autism, CP or similar.
  • Minimum height is 40" or minimum inseam of 22"
  • Maximum weight is 250 lbs.
  • Must be able to wear a properly fitted bike helmet
  • Ambulatory without an assistive device
  • A parent of legal guardian is required to stay at bike camp during each session.

Indicators of success

We have found that the campers who have the following attributes have the greatest rate of success in learning how to ride a two wheel bicycle at a Lose The Training Wheels camp.

  • Motivated, or able to motivated, to learn to ride a bike
  • Able to maintain contact with pedals
  • Able to maintain contact with handlebar
  • Able to keep head up and look forward
  • Adequate strength and stamina to ride 75 minutes for 5 days
  • Able to follow basic instructions in group setting
  • Participant has an opportunity to practice skills immediately following camp.

If you child does not have these attirbutes this camp may not be best for him/her at this time.

Sessions

Please select your preference of session. You will be notified at a later date with the time slot your child has been assigned to. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MAY NOT RECEIVE THE SESSION YOU HAVE SELECTED.

  • Session 1: 8:15am-9:30am - Full!
  • Session 2: 9:50am-11:05am - Full!
  • Session 3: 11:25am-12:40pm - Full!
  • Session 4: 1:45pm-3:00pm - Full!
  • Session 5: 3:20pm-4:35pm - Full!

Equipment

  • All adaptive bicycles will be provided.
  • Participants MUST bring their own properly fitted bike helmets
  • Proper footwear required. No open-toed shoes. Tennis shoes preferred.
  • Participants will also need to have there own bike. Many campers will be riding there own bike by day 3 of the camp.

Registration

All sessions are currently full, but you may add yourself to the wait list in case any participants are unable to attend.
