Teen shares talent to help newborns

Thursday, August 02, 2007 @ 9:57 AM
When we talk about outreach, we so often talk about helping persons with Down syndrome. Over the years, however, I have seen outreach that comes in different forms. There is the outreach that is naturally created when persons with Down syndrome interact with their communities through work. There is the outreach that comes from shared experience, and there is the outreach that comes from going to regular school with peers. Nicole has been in school with persons with disabilities since Kindergarten. When she found out about our New Parent Welcome! packets, she wanted to make them more personal. So this senior at Adams High School in Rochester Hills MI began using her knitting talent to make fabulous baby hats to warm newborns with Down syndrome. Nicole has no family members with disabilities, no community service project requirement. What she has is talent and a heart driving her to do something meaningful with her talents.

Last year, Nicole was a member of the homecoming court at her large high school. She is active in many student organizations and sports. And when she has time, she knits precious and beautiful hats for babies. Outreach has happened to her, so now outreach happens from her! When Nicole realized we send out over 2500 packages a year to new babies, she was a little overwhelmed. Indeed, we do not expect her to make 2500 hats so we will choose a state each month to receive these special treasures.

Thanks to Nicole!!!
