Save The Date!

Thursday, January 19, 2012 @ 7:18 AM

Throughout the past two years, babies were still born with Down syndrome; children still diagnosed with autism and we supported those families through our extensive and established outreach network. In order to continue to serve and speak for those who cannot speak up for themselves, we need to rebuild our financial resources.

We pride ourselves on having an event that raises as much awareness as it does money! This year will be no exception. From the moment you enter the Royal Park, the experience will be unique. You will have access to rare wines for tasting, collector quality artwork, exquisite dinner and one of a kind experiences offered through our silent and live auctions. At the same time, you will learn of the achievements of individuals with cognitive challenges.

Matthew Gibb, Deputy Oakland County Executive, Economic Development and Community Affairs, and his wife Deb are serving as our honorary chairs. Oakland County, under the steady leadership of L. Brooks Patterson, has been a leader in job creation and in the resurgence we see in the area.

At Starry Night, our newest initiative, Jobs with Dignity, will be shared with you. All of the hard work we have done, with your support, over the past years will culminate in increased employment for individuals with Down syndrome and other challenges, This is why we do what we do! This is why we ask for your help. To gives lives purpose.  As anyone who has worried about job loss or sought employment knows, good lives include meaningful work.

Sponsors are critical to small non-profits like Band of Angels. Your sponsorship enables us to continue to provide needed programs and services.  Please check our webiste for more information or contact Cynthia or Liz.  More than ever, we hope you will join us for this night of celebration.  Friday April 27th .  Mark your calendar!

Warmly,

A Drug for Down Syndrome

Tuesday, October 25, 2011 @ 4:05 PM

The Power of Angels!

As Band of Angels continues to provide resources that present a realistic and positive portrayal of children with Down syndrome, it is encouraging to find others who share our same commitment—and struggles.  In November, we will meet with Dr. Alberto Costa through a benefit to support his research focused on improving lives of individuals with Down syndrome.

A recent article in The New York Times, A Drug for Down Syndrome, tells the story of Dr. Costa, a physician and neuroscientist, who made a decision after the birth of his daughter, to devote himself to the study of Down syndrome.

After 15 years of study and research he will be applying his findings.

Costa has taken the next step: he is completing the first randomized clinical trial ever to take a drug that worked in mice with Down and apply it to humans … a milestone in the history of Down-syndrome research.

Those who are trying to enhance the lives of persons with Down syndrome, like Dr. Costa and all of us at Band of Angels, are concerned that financial resources are being redirected to testing on how to prevent Down syndrome.

Right now, beautiful babies are still being born with Down syndrome.  They are currently going to their local schools and learning alongside their non-challenged peers. They need support to have lives rich with promise and hope. Their parents need resources.  Funding for research like Dr. Costa’s and support programs like our New Parent Package are vital to those who have, or are expecting a baby with Down syndrome.  Now, more than ever we need to provide new and expectant parents with our “ New Parent Welcome Package”.

For most new parents this is the first, and often the only information they receive that provides both hope and inspiration for the birth of their child with Down syndrome.

However, due to drastic decreases in fundraising dollars, corporate donations and grants, this program is in jeopardy.  With your tax deductible donation we can continue our mission to provide resources to parents, hospitals, and the medical profession to help them provide realistic hopes and expectations for parents regarding the lives of those with Down syndrome.

Don't Rile Up the Big Brother!

Thursday, July 28, 2011 @ 12:33 PM

Mock My Pants, Not My Sister by Dr. Brian Skotko is a must read. Brian has been a tireless supporter of persons with Down syndrome since, I assume, well...birth! He is the kind of person who just cannot tolerate injustice and has no qualms about speaking out--even if his words may offend. So when I read his article, I had to share it with you!

Over the weekend, we had a lovely dinner with friends, John and Kim.  John cooked for us-bringing his own tools from home to make everything from scratch. He is a multi-talented man and enjoyable in every way. He also has a 43 year old brother with Down syndrome, Guiseppe, in Italy. During dinner, talked turned to injustice and John became very serious as he told of his protection of a child at his worksite several years ago. When I commented on his extremely fine-tuned need to make things right, he told my husband and me of the need he felt to protect Guiseppe as a child back in Italy. Seeing him in that moment, as an advocate, was new to me. I am used to seeing him as the life of the party. At that moment, I saw the deep seeds of goodness that helped create his charming persona.

Reflecting back on it, I see much of that in my son, Harper. His sense of justice has been sharpened by being a brother to Jordan. Blessfully, for all of us, brothers and sisters like John, Harper and Brian Skotko are advocates for people far beyond our families or even Down syndrome. There is a quality in them that goes beyond advocacy or goodness. It is a deep sense of justice and the right of all individuals to live with dignity and opportunity.

Thank you to all the siblings who write to me on behalf of others trying to right wrongs and correct injustice. You are inspirational! Now let's wait and see what GQ does about Brian's challenge!
