Rochester Hills, MI – May 24, 2013 - Michigan-based Band of Angels, an international outreach organization dedicated to helping individuals with Down Syndrome, autism and other cognitive challenges reach their full potential, will be playing a role in this year’s Detroit Grand Prix. The opportunity is courtesy of Roseville based Wolverine Bronze, a jobbing foundry serving the automotive, aircraft and aerospace industries and a primary-sponsor of Capaldi Racing, a Michigan-based professional race team with more than 30 years of experience.
As Capaldi Racing travels the country participating in various races, it is using a Band of Angels branded race car, t-shirts and publicity on the racing circuit to raise awareness of Band of Angels mission to maximize the capabilities and opportunities of those with Down syndrome and other cognitive impairments. This summer, individuals affiliated with the Band of Angels organization will serve as the flag carrier for brothers Chris and Craig Capaldi, who hail from Macomb County.
“Chris Capaldi was at the Circuit of the Americas race in Austin, Texas earlier this month and a young boy with Down syndrome was the flag carrier for Chris. The boy had the experience of a lifetime taking pictures with the racing team and getting an up-close experience into the racing world,” said Cynthia Hutchison, CEO and founder of Band of Angels.
Hutchison’s son Jordan, who has Down syndrome, will be the flag carrier on June 2 at the Grand Prix race in Detroit.
“Capaldi Racing and Wolverine Bronze have been wonderful spokespersons for Down syndrome and Band of Angels since 2011,” said Hutchison. “The unique opportunities they provide through professional racing takes the message of the potential of individuals with Down syndrome and other cognitive impairments to an entirely new audience.  To be a part of the Grand Prix race tradition in Detroit makes this experience particularly meaningful.”
The 2013 Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix runs May 31 – June 2 on the raceway at Belle Isle. Gates open at 7:30 a.m. and the Capaldi flag carrying is expected to be at approximately 11 a.m. on June 2. To purchase tickets, visit the Grand Prix website.

Go Maize and Blue!

Friday, April 05, 2013 @ 10:20 AM

As University of Michigan prepares to take the national title (okay, I know there are two games, but we know that is what they are preparing to do!!), thought it a good time to remind our Band of Angel supporters of the power of persevernce. Remember Owen Groesser and his three pointers!? Our friend Owen practiced and practiced in his driveway and made his way to his own national stage for his efforts. Read on about Michigan's Canadian import with a truly admirable work ethic!

Oh, and Go Blue. Not my alma mater, but the alma mater of both Band of Angels' web developer and graphic designer.  Michigan produces more than talented athletes-they produce gifted entreprenuerial leaders and team players.

Climbing Mountains--Literally!

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 @ 1:58 PM

And now, back to stories of inspiration and hope. Read about Eli Reimer climbing Mt. Everest and leading his party to the base.

So here is the story of what someone with Down syndrome CAN do. Amazing. Best of all, he treats it like another day on the trails because clearly, that's what it is to him. He was born into a family of hikers and climbers--I'm guessing his first 46 chromosomes and fifteen years helped him develop that same passion!! Congrats!

Off to the Races

Tuesday, September 18, 2012 @ 10:39 AM

What a day it was. Charley Matus, Chris Capaldi and professional driver, Craig Capaldi of Capaldi Racing unloaded their truck with three gleaming track stars: Fiesta, Mustang and Focus- to make an event to remember for their supporters and Band of Angels. As the founder and mother of two riders, I was both excited and terrified--often simultaneously! And yes, if you look closely at the photo album on our Facebook page, you might see me in the passenger seat!

I learned that racing IS a sport. Very hard work and amazingly hot when properly suited up!Special thanks to Wolverine Bronze Company and Waterford Hills Raceway for use of the track and entire facility. Don't forget to take a zoom look at the Ford GT!! And don't forget, Capaldi has added the Band of Angels logo to their cars, ensuring that Down syndrome and cognitive challenges are recognized from Indy to Daytona!
